SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim
DESCRIPTION:Visiting Artist Workshop with Yeonsoo Kim\n“Breathing Volume: Traditional Onggi and Buncheong Expression”\nSaturday\, August 15 (demonstration only) & Sunday\, August 16 (hands-on workshop) | 10 AM – 4 PM\nCost: Saturday only: $75 | Saturday & Sunday: $165 \nJoin us for a weekend workshop with visiting artist Yeonsoo Kim as he guides participants through the history of traditional Korean earthenware Onggi vessels\, their production and significance\, and how he incorporates these functional jars into expressive contemporary narratives. Kim will demonstrate the unique coil construction methods of Onggi pots and share the vibrant surface decoration techniques that illustrate his work. \nSaturday is a demonstration only that will focus on the “Breathing Volume” of Onggi. Following an artist talk on the history of Korean earthenware\, Kim will demonstrate the traditional “Tarae-ssaki” (coiling) and “Su-re-jil” (paddling) methods. Participants will see how rhythmic paddling creates structural integrity and dynamic volume in large-scale vessels. Saturday registration is open to all; no experience necessary. \nSunday is a hands-on workshop dedicated to the traditional Buncheong techniques of Sanggam (inlay) and Bakji (sgraffito). Participants will learn how to apply white slip over a darker clay body to create high-contrast imagery. Practicing on their own vessels and small demonstration tiles\, participants will explore how to carve out negative space (Bakji) and inlay fine lines (Sanggam) to translate personal narratives onto the clay surface. Sunday registration requires Saturday participation. Participants are encouraged to bring a leather-hard vessel to decorate; Umbrella will provide tiles for practice. Some ceramics experience recommended. \nAbout Yeonsoo: Yeonsoo Kim is a South Korean ceramic artist currently based in the United States. His work has received national and international recognition\, including being named one of NCECA’s Emerging Artists of 2020. Most recently\, he was honored with Best in Show at the 2025 Smithsonian Craft Show and was distinguished as the Featured Artist and Best in Show winner at Richmond Art and Design (2025).  \nHe has participated in prestigious residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation\, where he was awarded the Matsutani Fellowship and the Etchart-Sartre Fellowship. His residency experience also includes the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and the Korea Ceramic Foundation. Kim’s practice continues to explore the profound dialogue between tradition and contemporary form\, focusing on the evocative “breathing volume” and the visceral presence of clay.

DESCRIPTION:In Residence: Katie Fee\, Sayako Hiroi\, and Ivo Makianich \nFeaturing work by Umbrella Arts 2025/26 Artists-in-Residence in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nExhibition Dates: August 19 –  September 16\, 2026\, 10 AM – 9 PM \nClosing Reception: September 16\, 2026\, 6 PM – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nArtists’ Talk: September 9\, 2026\, 5 – 6 PM (RSVP appreciated) \n  \n“A year ago I had no studio\, and without one\, I was effectively unable to work. Umbrella Arts gave me a room\, and that single material fact changed the work more than any decision I made.” – Sayako Hiroi \nShowcasing a selection of work from our 2025/26 Artists-in-Residence cohort\, In Residence explores the development of their artistic processes over the past year\, examining what takes shape when you have the ability to provide your art practice a home. \nThe space and time made possible by the Umbrella Arts residency gave each artist the freedom to develop their art organically\, without the pressure to arrive at a result. Drawing on the tensions between presence and absence\, the physicality of the artist’s studio\, and Umbrella Arts’ commitment to community\, In Residence is a cumulative celebration of the cohort’s work that demonstrates the rediscovery and reclamation of their art. \nLearn more at TheUmbrellaArts.org/in-residence

SUMMARY:“Driven By Abstraction” - Monday Art Collective Closes Summer Exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 22\, from 2:00–3:30 PM\, visitors are invited to enjoy one last opportunity to experience this vibrant exhibition of contemporary art in the Mill’s historic second-floor galleries. Showcasing painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, collage\, and mixed media\, Driven by Abstraction highlights the creativity and diverse artistic voices of the Monday Art Collective\, a group of Boston-area artists brought together through a shared commitment to experimentation\, collaboration\, and mutual support. \nThe Monday Art Collective is a group of dedicated visual artists\, primarily based in the Boston area\, who have met weekly for the past four years to create art\, exchange ideas\, and support one another’s artistic growth. Originally brought together through workshops led by Cambridge artist Alexandra Sheldon\, the group continued meeting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic after studio classes could no longer be held in person. What began as a way to combat artistic isolation soon evolved into a lasting creative community. \nOver time\, the Collective’s artistic practices have expanded beyond the collage work that initially connected many of its members. Today\, the group explores a wide range of media\, including painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and mixed media. The exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill reflects this diversity of approach while highlighting the shared spirit of experimentation\, collaboration\, and encouragement that defines the Collective. \nVisitors to the exhibition will encounter a thoughtful and varied collection of contemporary works created by eight women artists whose practices continue to evolve through dialogue\, friendship\, and mutual inspiration. \nMill Hours: Tuesday and Saturday\, 10 am-4 pm. Open for guided tours of our living history museum; viewing of the exhibition in our second-floor galleries; and sales of our custom-made\, museum quality\, oval and circular picture and mirror frames. Admission is free\, with a suggested donation of $5. \nThe Old Schwamb Mill\,  \n17 Mill Lane\, Arlington\, MA\, 02476 \n781-643-0554 \nwww.oldschwambmill.org

SUMMARY:A Knock at Midnight: Black Preacher as Orator | BHTNH Tea Talks
DESCRIPTION:Traveling Tea Talks | Saturday\, August 22 | 4:00 PM | North Church\, Canaan\, NH \nThe Black preacher has long held a sacred and central role in African American public speech. Beyond their role as religious leaders\, preachers have historically served as political voices\, cultural transmitters\, community organizers\, and skilled rhetoricians. This dialogue explores how the pulpit evolved into both a sanctuary and a platform for liberation\, influencing the moral and political discourse within communities. \nThis conversation will take place in the church where renowned abolitionist\, scholar\, and Pan-African visionary Alexander Crummell once preached. Crummell founded the first independent Black Episcopal church in Washington\, D.C.\, and was a former student of Noyes Academy—New Hampshire’s first integrated and coeducational school\, established in 1835. \nView suggested reading list here.
