SUMMARY:Spirits of the Old Manse: A Candlelit Encounter with the Past
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the Old Manse after dark for a rare\, intimate experience through the rooms where history was lived – and still lingers. \nThis is not a haunted house. This is something older\, quieter\, and more unsettling. Guided by candlelight\, you’ll move room by room through the 18th-century home once occupied by Revolutionaries\, philosophers\, and writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. Along the way\, you’ll hear true stories pulled from letters\, journals\, and the etched words left behind – literally – on the windows and walls. \nYou’ll sit where Emerson and Hawthorne wrote. See the view where the family watched the battle of the North Bridge. Stand in the attic where ministers practiced sermons and scratched their names into the beams. \nThis is a fully guided\, story-driven experience designed to bring out the emotional resonance and layered past of the house – not just what happened here\, but how it felt. \nSpace is limited. Flashlights provided. This experience is best suited for guests 10 and up.\nPlease arrive at your designated time slot. Late entry may not be accommodated. \nThis tour involves going up several flights of steep stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. This tour may at times be conducted in low light situations; flashlights are provided. There are no public restrooms on site. Restrooms are located nearby in Concord’s Visitor’s Center. Parking is available in front of the museum in The Old Manse parking lot. \nCancellation Policy: In the event The Trustees cancels a program due to severe weather\, low enrollment\, or other circumstances\, we will notify registrants by email and issue a full refund or transfer to another scheduled program within two weeks of the cancellation. To cancel a reservation\, please contact The Old Manse 7 days prior to the start of the program to receive a full refund. SUMMARY:Stone Prayers: An Update to the Inventory
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Curtiss Hoffman has investigated the thousands of enigmatic stone monuments scattered throughout the woodlands and fields of the eastern United States and Canada. Regional descendant Indigenous communities identify these structures as “stone prayers”—sacred sites that deserve protection. Hoffman documents archaeological and environmental evidence supporting the Indigenous origin of many of these monuments.

SUMMARY:“Police History during the Great Depression” at Fitchburg Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:Crime doesn’t pay\, but it will definitely amuse attendees who come to “Police History during the Great Depression” at Fitchburg Historical Society\, 781 Main St. on Wednesday\, October 14\, at 6 p.m. Researchers Sally Cragin and Dr. Joe Cronin focused on researching crimes large and small which were registered between 1930 and 1935 in the newly arrived archives of Fitchburg Police Department ledgers. During this period\, petty crime skyrocketed\, and youth mischief escalated\, while serious crime of theft $50 and over reduced. This educational event is free to attend. \nSince January\, the pair has slowly made their way through thousands of typed pages of crimes great and small. “Some of these incidents will make you chuckle\, such as the boy who misbehaved at the Cumings Theatre by sitting in the balcony and blowing pepper onto patrons seated below – pepper he admitted bringing from home. Other crimes are more serious and show the desperate straits people were in as well as the correlation between drunkenness and crime.” \nFitchburg Historical Society received the ledgers earlier this year\, and Fitchburg Police Chief Steven Giannini stated\, “The Fitchburg Police Department is thrilled to be able to donate these records to the Fitchburg Historical Society\, where we know they will be categorized and preserved in the manner that they deserve. This collection truly belongs to the community and I hope that they enjoy reading these passages and traveling back to a different period of time as much as I have.” \nSally Cragin is a Fitchburg resident with deep roots in the community. She is a prize-winning journalist who wrote for the Boston Globe before running for Fitchburg School Committee in 2007. Currently\, she serves as a Fitchburg City Councilor-at-Large and is at work on her third book. \nDr. Joseph Cronin is a retired dentist who leads the “Poetry Readaloud” monthly event at his residence\, The Gables. He began doing research at the Fitchburg Historical Society in 2021 and was honored for his work with a Local Star Award from the Massachusetts History Alliance. He authored his memoir “The Last Narrowback\,” about growing up with his Irish family in Boston. \nThe performance venue is fully handicapped accessible and there is ample street parking.  For more information\, visit fitchburghistoricalsociety.com\, email welcome (at) fitchburghistoricalsociety.com\, or call 978-345-1157.
