SUMMARY:In Residence: Katie Fee\, Sayako Hiroi\, and Ivo Makianich
DESCRIPTION:In Residence: Katie Fee\, Sayako Hiroi\, and Ivo Makianich \nFeaturing work by Umbrella Arts 2025/26 Artists-in-Residence in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nExhibition Dates: August 19 –  September 16\, 2026\, 10 AM – 9 PM \nClosing Reception: September 16\, 2026\, 6 PM – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nArtists’ Talk: September 9\, 2026\, 5 – 6 PM (RSVP appreciated) \n  \n“A year ago I had no studio\, and without one\, I was effectively unable to work. Umbrella Arts gave me a room\, and that single material fact changed the work more than any decision I made.” – Sayako Hiroi \nShowcasing a selection of work from our 2025/26 Artists-in-Residence cohort\, In Residence explores the development of their artistic processes over the past year\, examining what takes shape when you have the ability to provide your art practice a home. \nThe space and time made possible by the Umbrella Arts residency gave each artist the freedom to develop their art organically\, without the pressure to arrive at a result. Drawing on the tensions between presence and absence\, the physicality of the artist’s studio\, and Umbrella Arts’ commitment to community\, In Residence is a cumulative celebration of the cohort’s work that demonstrates the rediscovery and reclamation of their art. \nLearn more at TheUmbrellaArts.org/in-residence

SUMMARY:“Driven By Abstraction” - Monday Art Collective Closes Summer Exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 22\, from 2:00–3:30 PM\, visitors are invited to enjoy one last opportunity to experience this vibrant exhibition of contemporary art in the Mill’s historic second-floor galleries. Showcasing painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, collage\, and mixed media\, Driven by Abstraction highlights the creativity and diverse artistic voices of the Monday Art Collective\, a group of Boston-area artists brought together through a shared commitment to experimentation\, collaboration\, and mutual support. \nThe Monday Art Collective is a group of dedicated visual artists\, primarily based in the Boston area\, who have met weekly for the past four years to create art\, exchange ideas\, and support one another’s artistic growth. Originally brought together through workshops led by Cambridge artist Alexandra Sheldon\, the group continued meeting virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic after studio classes could no longer be held in person. What began as a way to combat artistic isolation soon evolved into a lasting creative community. \nOver time\, the Collective’s artistic practices have expanded beyond the collage work that initially connected many of its members. Today\, the group explores a wide range of media\, including painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and mixed media. The exhibition at the Old Schwamb Mill reflects this diversity of approach while highlighting the shared spirit of experimentation\, collaboration\, and encouragement that defines the Collective. \nVisitors to the exhibition will encounter a thoughtful and varied collection of contemporary works created by eight women artists whose practices continue to evolve through dialogue\, friendship\, and mutual inspiration. \nMill Hours: Tuesday and Saturday\, 10 am-4 pm. Open for guided tours of our living history museum; viewing of the exhibition in our second-floor galleries; and sales of our custom-made\, museum quality\, oval and circular picture and mirror frames. Admission is free\, with a suggested donation of $5. \nThe Old Schwamb Mill\,  \n17 Mill Lane\, Arlington\, MA\, 02476 \n781-643-0554 \nwww.oldschwambmill.org

SUMMARY:A Knock at Midnight: Black Preacher as Orator | BHTNH Tea Talks
DESCRIPTION:Traveling Tea Talks | Saturday\, August 22 | 4:00 PM | North Church\, Canaan\, NH \nThe Black preacher has long held a sacred and central role in African American public speech. Beyond their role as religious leaders\, preachers have historically served as political voices\, cultural transmitters\, community organizers\, and skilled rhetoricians. This dialogue explores how the pulpit evolved into both a sanctuary and a platform for liberation\, influencing the moral and political discourse within communities. \nThis conversation will take place in the church where renowned abolitionist\, scholar\, and Pan-African visionary Alexander Crummell once preached. Crummell founded the first independent Black Episcopal church in Washington\, D.C.\, and was a former student of Noyes Academy—New Hampshire’s first integrated and coeducational school\, established in 1835. \nView suggested reading list here.

SUMMARY:In Support of the Army: How the Housewives of Massachusetts Supported the Continental Army
DESCRIPTION:It is often said that the army marches on its stomach and it’s just as true during the 18th century as it is today. But how was the army supplied with that food? How was it cooked and processed? And what ways did the food that housewives cooked\, processed\, and preserved in their homes support the Continental Army as it grew from local militia groups at the Battel of Bunker Hill to a full army under General George Washington?\n\nIn this program\, “In Support of the Army: How the Housewives of Massachusetts Supported the Formation of the Continental Army Through Foodways\,” foodways historian Stacy Booth will discuss not only how the housewives of Massachusetts provisioned the army in the early years of the Revolutionary War but also how they used food and cooking as ways to protest taxation and the political policies that fanned the flames of a revolution. \nStacy Booth is a foodways historian with almost 20 years of experience reenacting and presenting to the public. She specializes in 17th and 18th century New England foodways presentations and cooking demonstrations. She worked previously at Plimoth Patuxet (formerly Plimoth Plantation) and Coggeshall Farm Museum as a 1st and 3rd person reenactor. She is currently a board member of Col Bailey’s 2nd Massachusetts Regiment\, a Revolutionary War reenactment group who has been participating in national reenactments these past 50 plus years. Her experiences in Revolutionary War reenactment for the last 10 years have allowed her to travel from Canada to Maryland participating in hearth/campfire cooking as well as outdoor bread oven baking demonstrations. She also runs her business\, Forgotten Recipes (forgotten-recipes.com)\, where she has presented\, cooked at or set up displays for libraries\, museums and historic houses for the past six years. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Gastronomy at Boston University.

SUMMARY:Op-Eds: Messages to America
DESCRIPTION:September 5 to 27\, 2026 \nExhibit hours: 11-5pm Tue-Sun \nReception: Sept 13 from 3pm-5pm \n \nWith incredible wit and poignancy\, four Boston area artists Merill Comeau\, Keith Francis\, Shea Justice and Adrienne Sloane\, hold the mirror up to our struggling and fractured democracy\, asking us to not look away\, and challenging us to live up to the founding ideals of our nation. \n \n“Art has always played a crucial role in the story of democracy\, as a voice of the people\, a tool of resistance\, and a mirror reflecting both hope and hardship. In times of oppression\, artists have dared to speak truth to power\, illuminating injustice and amplifying the struggles of everyday people. Art is a lifeline to democratic ideals\, keeping the balance of “rule by the people” alive and in check.” Rachel Rose Moore \nArtwork by Keith Francis- “The Invasion”
