SUMMARY:Open Saturday at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is open from 9 AM – 4 PM. Visit our Library & Archives and our exhibitions\, including: \n–Nothing Short of Independence: Selections from the Library & Archives\, on view April 6 through October 16\, 2026. On view in the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives reading room are objects from the collection produced during the American Revolutionary War. These items can help us see both the smaller activities that sustained the war as well as the larger picture of how the war impacted combatants and ordinary people. From a 1776 sermon to material related to the Battle of Saratoga in 1777\, to Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown in 1781\, and the discharge of soldiers who helped fight the war\, these items can help us connect to this past and to reflect on what this history means to us today. \n–Mapping Change in North America: 1755-1834\, on view September 15\, 2025\, through September 25\, 2026. Between 1755 and 1834\, American\, British\, French\, and German cartographers created maps to record\, establish\, and legitimize land claims in North America. These maps illustrate large shifts in the territorial possessions of European nations\, as well as in land inhabited by indigenous peoples. Taken together\, these maps depict the drastic shifts in boundaries and territories brought about by national ambition and by decades of conflict that eventually led to the North America we recognize today. \n–Protest & Promise: The American Revolution in Lexington (ongoing). After years of tension between Great Britain and its North American colonies\, a skirmish on the town green in Lexington\, Massachusetts broke long-held bonds and ignited the American Revolutionary War. In an unprecedented moment in 1775\, ordinary people in Lexington made extraordinary choices. An entire community—women\, men\, black\, white\, young\, old\, enslaved\, and free—helped spark a revolution. Two hundred and fifty years later\, Americans continue to remember April 19\, 1775\, as a moment when everyday people shaped history. This exhibition explores the events of April 19\, 1775\, with images\, objects\, and an in-depth look at this watershed event and how it has been remembered. \n–Looking Back\, Moving Forward: Fifty Years of Collecting (ongoing). Motivated by patriotism and his belief that Americans should celebrate the country’s traditions\, ideals\, and great leaders\, George A. Newbury suggested that the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction\, the organization Newbury led in his role of Sovereign Grand Commander\, build an American history museum and library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. The enthusiastic support of Scottish Rite Masons brought Newbury’s vision to life. For fifty years the museum and library has sought to fulfill Newbury’s vision “to tell a thrilling story—the story of America” through programs\, publications\, exhibitions\, and collections. This exhibition explores how the museum and library’s collection has grown\, changed\, and helped tell this story over half a century. \nDATE: Saturday\, May 30 \nTIME: 9 AM – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library\, 33 Marrett Road\, Lexington\, MA \n  \nThis program is offered by the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Stow\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stow Historical Society on Friday\, May 29 at 7:00 PM for a lively community performance at the historic Stow Town Hall (375 Great Road). The evening will conclude with an ice cream social. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:Nym Cooke: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum.\n\nNym Cooke is a music historian\, choral conductor\, and former film and theater director. One of his first projects in the theatrical world broke barriers and made a lasting impact on the community. In the summer of 1967\, as a high school senior\, he produced and co-directed a film\, titled Doublecross. Collaborating with 57 other Lexington High School students\, Cooke helped to conceptualize\, fund\, produce\, film\, and edit this 38-minute silent mobster film. The only adult involvement was from musician Ernest Stires\, who composed the film’s musical score. Today\, participants still get together for Doublecross reunions\, exchanging fond memories of this formative experience. Cooke is passionate about bringing people together\, believing that projects like Doublecross create “little worlds” that exist apart from everything else. In those moments\, all that matters is the people working together towards a shared creative goal.\n\nJoin us in welcoming Nym Cooke and Doublecross alumni for a discussion and celebration of his career and the Doublecross project.\n\n$10 LHM members\, $15 nonmembers

SUMMARY:The Faulkner Family Barn
DESCRIPTION:During May\, 2026\, the Iron Work Farm will both celebrate and mourn the loss of the magnificent 19th-century barn that crowned Faulkner Hill during the decades that it occupied the working heart of the Faulkner family farm. The building was both a livestock and hay barn\, built in the three-aisle form that came to typify the progressive farming era in New England. \nBut there’s a darker side to the barn’s story. In 1938 it became perhaps Acton’s best-known example of a building lost to arson\, as it joined the list of victims of a group of “barnburners” whose mid-night torches destroyed several unoccupied buildings over a period of several years in various parts of Acton before World War II. Here\, at least\, the granite-block cellar survives. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 24 \nTIME: 3 – 5 PM \nLOCATION: Faulkner Homestead\, 5 High Street\, Acton\, MA 01720 \nACCESS: The barn site is not officially accessible\, but is reached by a cleared\, gently rising dirt path that is part of a loop trail around the property. The doorway into the Faulkner House retains a low threshold and a single\, shallow stone step at the main entrance. Parking is available on site. \n  \n  \nThis program is offered by Iron Work Farm as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Iron Work Farm open house at Faulkner Homestead and Jones Tavern
DESCRIPTION:The Iron Work Farm will hold their first “4th Sunday” open houses of the season (1-3 p.m. at the Tavern and 3-5 p.m. at the homestead).  A highlight this month at the Faulkner Homestead as part of Freedom’s Way Heritage Association’s “Hidden Treasures” program will be a focus on the Faulkner family’s huge 19th-century barn\, which stood on Faulkner Hill until destroyed by arson in 1938.  The granite barn cellar still stands\, as one of the historic sites on the homestead’s six-acre property. \nWe will also welcome back members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers Guild to demonstrate aspects of 18th-century home textile production. \nParking on site or nearby.
