SUMMARY:The Faulkner Family Barn
DESCRIPTION:During May\, 2026\, the Iron Work Farm will both celebrate and mourn the loss of the magnificent 19th-century barn that crowned Faulkner Hill during the decades that it occupied the working heart of the Faulkner family farm. The building was both a livestock and hay barn\, built in the three-aisle form that came to typify the progressive farming era in New England. \nBut there’s a darker side to the barn’s story. In 1938 it became perhaps Acton’s best-known example of a building lost to arson\, as it joined the list of victims of a group of “barnburners” whose mid-night torches destroyed several unoccupied buildings over a period of several years in various parts of Acton before World War II. Here\, at least\, the granite-block cellar survives. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 24 \nTIME: 3 – 5 PM \nLOCATION: Faulkner Homestead\, 5 High Street\, Acton\, MA 01720 \nACCESS: The barn site is not officially accessible\, but is reached by a cleared\, gently rising dirt path that is part of a loop trail around the property. The doorway into the Faulkner House retains a low threshold and a single\, shallow stone step at the main entrance. Parking is available on site. \n  \n  \nThis program is offered by Iron Work Farm as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public. Click to discover more Hidden Treasures!

SUMMARY:Iron Work Farm open house at Faulkner Homestead and Jones Tavern
DESCRIPTION:The Iron Work Farm will hold their first “4th Sunday” open houses of the season (1-3 p.m. at the Tavern and 3-5 p.m. at the homestead).  A highlight this month at the Faulkner Homestead as part of Freedom’s Way Heritage Association’s “Hidden Treasures” program will be a focus on the Faulkner family’s huge 19th-century barn\, which stood on Faulkner Hill until destroyed by arson in 1938.  The granite barn cellar still stands\, as one of the historic sites on the homestead’s six-acre property. \nWe will also welcome back members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers Guild to demonstrate aspects of 18th-century home textile production. \nParking on site or nearby.

SUMMARY:Fruitlands Fairy Forest
DESCRIPTION:Calling All Woodland Fairies and Gnomes! The Fruitlands Fairy Forest is back! Stop by the Fairy Village to help welcome them for their summer stay! \nWhile living at Fruitlands\, 10-year-old Louisa May Alcott wrote in her diary that she “had a lovely time in the woods with Anna and Lizzie. We were fairies\, and made gowns and paper wings. I ‘flied’ the highest of all.” \nDon your wings\, grab your crowns\, and come play in the Fruitlands woods as Louisa and her sisters once played. We encourage all visitors to our grounds and trails to build fairy and gnome houses around the Willard Archeological site along the yellow trail at Fruitlands Museum. Collect natural materials and build a house for the Fruitlands fairies and gnomes\, then leave your house for the sprites to enjoy and other guests to see as the fairy forest grows. \nRegister online to receive a digital DIY Fruitlands Fairy Forest Activity Kit (including map\, fairy wand craft tutorial\, and more) prior to your visit. Be sure to scroll through your confirmation email below the tickets for visitor info and the link to your Activity Kit. The Activity Kit will also be available through QR codes throughout the property. \nFairy Forest visitors should be aware that due to wet conditions\, some trails may be waterlogged or muddy. Please dress appropriately for the hiking loop. \nDATES: Daily from May 21 through June 21. Stop by for the opening weekend to help welcome the Fairies for their summer stay! \nTIME: Dawn to Dusk \nLOCATION: Fruitlands Museum Trails\, 102 Prospect Hill Road\, Harvard\, MA 01451 \n  \n  \nThis program is offered by Fruitlands Museum as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.
