SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Harvard\, MA
DESCRIPTION:The Harvard Historical Society will host a compelling performance of Declaring Independence: Then & Now on Sunday\, June 14 at 2:00 PM at the 1871 Harvard Town Hall Upper Level (13 Ayer Road). In this historic space\, attendees are invited to consider the local dimensions of a national story. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. The script\, written by public historian Mary B. Fuhrer\, utilizes primary source material researched by citizen historians to reveal how individuals within Massachusetts towns debated and responded to the question of independence in the spring and summer of 1776\, followed by an annotated reading of the Declaration itself. \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, 15 community-hosted performances are scheduled across the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area during the spring and summer of 2026. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:Prepared for War: Sudbury and the Massachusetts Militia
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sudbury History Center and Museum on July 16th for a fascinating evening lecture on Sudbury and the Massachusetts Militia on the eve of Lexington and Concord! \n\n\n\n\nIn October 1774\, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress ordered towns across the Colony to prepare for war with England. In response\, the Colony entered a wartime phase that included creating minute companies\, stockpiling arms\, ammunition\, and equipment\, and establishing a defense network ready to mobilize if the redcoats marched from Boston into the countryside. \nJoin historian Alexander Cain as he discusses the Colony’s response to the British threat of war and examines the Massachusetts militia and minuteman system\, with an emphasis on Sudbury on the eve of Lexington and Concord.
