SUMMARY:Declaring Independence: Then & Now – Ashby\, MA
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 13 at 2:00 PM\, the Ashby Historical Society will host Declaring Independence: Then & Now at the Ashby Congregational Church (21 New Ipswich Road) off the historic town common. Experience a thought-provoking performance in an intimate setting that invites reflection on independence\, community\, and shared responsibility. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. Fuhrer\, utilizes primary source material researched by citizen historians to reveal how individuals within Massachusetts towns debated and responded to the question of independence in the spring and summer of 1776\, followed by an annotated reading of the Declaration itself. \nIn commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, 15 community-hosted performances are scheduled across the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area during the spring and summer of 2026. Find a performance near you! \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now is supported\, in part\, by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

SUMMARY:𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 & 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
DESCRIPTION:NATIVE COMMUNITIES & THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION \nWith Truman State University Emeritus Professor of History \nProfessor Daniel Mandell \nBefore the Revolutionary War\, New England’s Native communities were active in imperial politics\, sending delegates to seek the Crown’s protection against increasingly intrusive and corrupt colonial officials. But when war with England erupted\, many of the men went to serve in the local militia and Continental army\, or on naval privateers\, alongside white and black comrades. As a result\, after the war\, Native communities embraced democratic rhetoric to defend their lands\, autonomy\, and religious liberties. Revolution was a process that continued through the early 1800s\, and the region’s Indigenous population was a part of that process\, even as they remained a people apart. \nJoin us for a presentation followed by Q&A.

SUMMARY:The Truth About Baked Beans: An Edible History of New England
DESCRIPTION:Meg Muckenhoupt will bring smiles—and a hunger for popular foods—during her discussion about the history of New England’s food\, immigration\, tourism\, and how ideas about identity have shaped our menus from 1825 to today. \nAuthor of “The Truth about Baked Beans: An Edible History of New England\,” Muckenhoupt’s book began with a simple question: When did Bostonians start putting molasses in their baked beans? That question sent her on a lengthy journey through invented histories\, selective memories\, and changing tastes from colonial New England to the present day. \nHer presentation will cap the Society’s Annual Meeting\, including elections of Directors and reports from Society officers. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 31 \nTIME: 2 – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Bedford Old Town Hall\, Great Room (3rd floor)\, 16 South Road\, Bedford\, MA 01730 \nACCESS: There is an elevator to the Third Floor. \n  \n \nThis program is offered by the Bedford Historical Society as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Groton's Glacial Sculpting
DESCRIPTION:A glacier 2-miles thick covered Massachusetts 100\,000 years ago. It slowly melted and receded back north\, ending about 12\,000 years ago. But the “footprints” of that glacier remain in the land’s sculpted geography. \nIn Groton\, for unknown reasons\, there is an unusual abundance of those footprints. There are 40+ hills of dirt and stones (drumlins)\, dozens of meandering elevated ribbons of dirt and stones (eskers)\, a score of big round pits/ponds in the ground (kettle holes)\, and scraped granite bedrock (outcrops and wetlands). In this tour\, you’ll visit three conservation areas in three hours to see examples of these glacial remnants via the Groton Trails Network\, a system of roughly 130 miles of public trails within the town’s borders. \nThe trails are rugged and there are numerous steep hills totaling 500 feet. Total hiking distance will be 5.7 miles. Participants must be physically fit. No pets allowed. Activity will only be cancelled if there is severe weather predicted. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 31 \nTIME: 1 – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Participants should park at the Nashua River Rail Trail parking lot on Sand Hill Road\, Groton\, MA. This is adjacent to the Shepley Hill conservation land. The second conservation area that will be visited is the Casella Preserve. We will park at the upper athletic fields of the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School on Chicopee Row. The third will be the Groton Memorial Town Forest and we will park at the end of Town Forest Rd (follow Wharton Row off Rte. 225). \n  \nThis program is offered by the Groton Trails Committee as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:Open Saturday at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library is open from 9 AM – 4 PM. Visit our Library & Archives and our exhibitions\, including: \n–Nothing Short of Independence: Selections from the Library & Archives\, on view April 6 through October 16\, 2026. On view in the Van Gorden-Williams Library & Archives reading room are objects from the collection produced during the American Revolutionary War. These items can help us see both the smaller activities that sustained the war as well as the larger picture of how the war impacted combatants and ordinary people. From a 1776 sermon to material related to the Battle of Saratoga in 1777\, to Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown in 1781\, and the discharge of soldiers who helped fight the war\, these items can help us connect to this past and to reflect on what this history means to us today. \n–Mapping Change in North America: 1755-1834\, on view September 15\, 2025\, through September 25\, 2026. Between 1755 and 1834\, American\, British\, French\, and German cartographers created maps to record\, establish\, and legitimize land claims in North America. These maps illustrate large shifts in the territorial possessions of European nations\, as well as in land inhabited by indigenous peoples. Taken together\, these maps depict the drastic shifts in boundaries and territories brought about by national ambition and by decades of conflict that eventually led to the North America we recognize today. \n–Protest & Promise: The American Revolution in Lexington (ongoing). After years of tension between Great Britain and its North American colonies\, a skirmish on the town green in Lexington\, Massachusetts broke long-held bonds and ignited the American Revolutionary War. In an unprecedented moment in 1775\, ordinary people in Lexington made extraordinary choices. An entire community—women\, men\, black\, white\, young\, old\, enslaved\, and free—helped spark a revolution. Two hundred and fifty years later\, Americans continue to remember April 19\, 1775\, as a moment when everyday people shaped history. This exhibition explores the events of April 19\, 1775\, with images\, objects\, and an in-depth look at this watershed event and how it has been remembered. \n–Looking Back\, Moving Forward: Fifty Years of Collecting (ongoing). Motivated by patriotism and his belief that Americans should celebrate the country’s traditions\, ideals\, and great leaders\, George A. Newbury suggested that the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction\, the organization Newbury led in his role of Sovereign Grand Commander\, build an American history museum and library in Lexington\, Massachusetts. The enthusiastic support of Scottish Rite Masons brought Newbury’s vision to life. For fifty years the museum and library has sought to fulfill Newbury’s vision “to tell a thrilling story—the story of America” through programs\, publications\, exhibitions\, and collections. This exhibition explores how the museum and library’s collection has grown\, changed\, and helped tell this story over half a century. \nDATE: Saturday\, May 30 \nTIME: 9 AM – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library\, 33 Marrett Road\, Lexington\, MA \n  \nThis program is offered by the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. DESCRIPTION:Join the Stow Historical Society on Friday\, May 29 at 7:00 PM for a lively community performance at the historic Stow Town Hall (375 Great Road). The evening will conclude with an ice cream social. \nDeclaring Independence: Then & Now brings to life the Declaration of Independence as a forum for civic dialogue and engagement through a forty-minute performance and ensuing moderated community conversation. SUMMARY:Nym Cooke: Leading Lexingtonian
DESCRIPTION:Lexington has heroes in every century\, as change-seekers have made their mark on the town. Through building community\, working for social change\, pioneering in their fields\, and pursuing creative passions\, Leading Lexingtonians keep Lexington on the map as a historic place. This lecture series highlights their accomplishments\, which are also displayed on a rotating basis in the Lexington Depot Museum.\n\nNym Cooke is a music historian\, choral conductor\, and former film and theater director. One of his first projects in the theatrical world broke barriers and made a lasting impact on the community. In the summer of 1967\, as a high school senior\, he produced and co-directed a film\, titled Doublecross. Collaborating with 57 other Lexington High School students\, Cooke helped to conceptualize\, fund\, produce\, film\, and edit this 38-minute silent mobster film. The only adult involvement was from musician Ernest Stires\, who composed the film’s musical score. Today\, participants still get together for Doublecross reunions\, exchanging fond memories of this formative experience. Cooke is passionate about bringing people together\, believing that projects like Doublecross create “little worlds” that exist apart from everything else. In those moments\, all that matters is the people working together towards a shared creative goal.\n\nJoin us in welcoming Nym Cooke and Doublecross alumni for a discussion and celebration of his career and the Doublecross project.\n\n$10 LHM members\, $15 nonmembers
