SUMMARY:On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher
DESCRIPTION:On Being Human: Mosaic Meditations by Cynthia Fisher\nSeptember 18 – December 20\, 2026 in the Allie Kussin Main Gallery \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nMosaic Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated)\nArtist Talk: Wednesday\, November 7\, 3 – 4 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDriven by curiosity and a background in Wildlife Biology\, Cynthia Fisher has created varied and philosophical works that seek to elevate mosaics beyond the world of craft and into fine art. Through inspiring cultural conversations\, Fisher aims to engage the viewer in questioning our impact on the natural world. \nUtilizing a wide range of materials\, including vitreous glass and broken pottery\, the tactile and textured nature of the medium forces us to share the space. Prompting questions about how we currently engage with the world around us and how it may engage with us. Through her works\, she explores our environmental impact on our planet\, addressing not only the greatness of human life\, but our responsibility towards the natural world. \n“I do have reasons for hope: our clever brains\, the resilience of nature\, the indomitable human spirit\, and above all\, the commitment of young people when they’re empowered to take action.” – Jane Goodall \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund
DESCRIPTION:Menjunje/Amalgamation: An Exploration of Language and Identity by Shelly “Lola” Freund \nSeptember 23 – November 16\, 2026 in the Wedge Gallery \n  \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nDrop-in Fingerpainting Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nArtist Talk: Friday\, October 23\, 5 – 6 PM – Artist Talk (RSVP appreciated) \n  \nArtist Shelly “Lola” Freund utilizes brightly colored renditions of her own fingerprints and objects reminiscent of family keepsakes to reflect on her multicultural identity. By using her own body as the subject of her work\, Freund asks us to consider how identity is categorized and interpreted in our modern world.   \n  \nFreund’s sweeping canvases feature vibrant pinks and blues that shimmer with the additions of rhinestones\, glitter\, and copper. As light bounces from one canvas to the next\, the viewer is taken on a journey through the artist’s own diasporic origins. Whorls of string create pathways\, as she weaves between English\, Spanish\, and Hebrew\, reflected amongst the titles. \n  \nFreund’s painted geographies ask us to engage with questions of multiculturalism\, social tensions\, and attempt to identify the line between assimilation and acculturation. \n  \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury
DESCRIPTION:Whorl: Vertical Gallery Activation by Debra Fleury\nSeptember 23\, 2026 – February 26\, 2027 \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6 – 8 PM (RSVP appreciated)\nDrop-in Drawing Activity: during Free Family Day\, Saturday\, October 10\, 2 – 4 PM (registration appreciated) \nOur inaugural Vertical Gallery Activation features a multi-media installation from Massachusetts artist Debra Fleury. Influenced by the human experience\, Fleury’s work seeks to encourage exploration and evoke a sense of joy and wonder. \nTranslucent fabric has been painted in a watercolor effect and sewn together\, creating channels and undulating patterns that are then filled with wire. Through this process\, “a hidden internal world is made visible\, giving shape to what is deeply felt but not easily named.” The work’s suggestion of structure and mercurial nature constantly transforms the piece\, allowing for a range of viewing experiences. \nFleury’s installation evokes a sense of curiosity in the viewer as they explore and experience the energy and evolution of her work in real time. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all. \nLearn more at theUmbrellaArts.org/whorl

SUMMARY:Disperse: Art Ramble by Helen Duncan
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Art Ramble features work by multi-media artist Helen Duncan. Duncan’s porcelain clay and wire forms are dispersed along the Fairyland Pond Trail in the Hapgood Wright Town Forest\, right off of Concord Center. Duncan’s delicate dandelion-esque pieces come alive on the trail\, responding to their environment by shifting with the breeze and reflecting sunlight. Through these exchanges\, as well as our own impact on the work\, we are asked to examine how the varied elements of the world around us may interact with each other. \nThrough her outdoor installation\, Duncan aims to create a space that “encourages reflection and awareness of the delicate balances that shape both the natural world and our own lived experiences\,” inviting viewers to slow down\, look\, and take notice. \nThe Umbrella Arts Galleries are free and open to all. \nOpening Reception: Tuesday\, October 6\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM (RSVP appreciated) \nArtist Walks (RSVP appreciated): \n\nSaturday\, October 10\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM (every 30 minutes) with Free Family Day\n\n\nTuesday\, October 13\, 9:00 – 10:00 AM\nThursday\, November 5\, 3:00 – 4:00 PM\n\n

SUMMARY:An Entire Wardrobe 250 Years Out of Style: Presenting Identity Through Dress in Living History
DESCRIPTION:Living history interpreter Audrey Stuck-Girard explains what clothing meant to early Americans\, both in material value and as a means of identifying oneself in society. We will examine images of surviving garments and artwork from the era\, discussing the details of the clothing in the context of social status\, gender\, age\, race\, profession\, religion\, and politics. Next\, we shift focus to the choices made by modern reenactors and living history interpreters when putting together our “costumes\,” and the ways we use historical clothing as a tool for public engagement and education. Audrey concludes by sharing a few examples of garments she has made and worn for revolutionary-era living history events. \nAudrey Stuck-Girard is a historical wigmaker and hairdresser\, living history performer\, and costumer.

SUMMARY:"An Extraordinary Code of Laws": Abigail Adams's Hopes for a Better America in 1776
DESCRIPTION:This scripted one-woman show takes place in the spring of 1776. On March 31st\, Abigail Adams writes a letter to her husband John Adams\, who is serving as one of the Massachusetts delegates to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. She asks him to “Remember the Ladies\,” receives his flippant response a few weeks later\, and on April 27th Abigail describes her disappointment and frustration in a letter to her close friend and mentor\, Mercy Otis Warren. Throughout the play\, Mrs. Adams muses aloud on the topics of government\, freedom\, education\, and women’s rights. These passages are taken from other letters she wrote between 1774 and 1782. There is a strong “4th wall” for this performance; Mrs. Adams does not see the audience\, just the interior of her own house. The show is approximately 40 minutes long\, with an optional 15-20-minute Q&A following. \nAudrey Stuck-Girard is a historical wigmaker and hairdresser\, living history performer\, and costumer.

SUMMARY:Life in Menotomy: Aftermath of April 19\, 1775
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! \nThe bloody events that unfolded in Menotomy (now Arlington) on the first day of the American Revolution have often been recounted in detail. But what happened after the British troops withdrew? How did this rural precinct of Cambridge recover from the violence of April 19\, 1775\, and carry on while war continued just miles away in Boston? \nFor Menotomy’s residents\, the aftermath of battle brought the challenge of resuming everyday life in a community shaken by violence. Families still had to support themselves\, maintain their households\, and care for their neighbors\, even as the conflict’s outcome remained uncertain. \nJoin renowned historian Richard A. SUMMARY:The Web they Wove Women and their Wardrobes during New Englands Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Underpinning the sensationalism of battle reports and broadsides is the often-silent steadiness of women’s work with textiles. The choices they made every day about fashion and fabric consumption and creation drove the course of the revolution just as determinedly as any Congress. As southern New England commemorates the 250th anniversary of the War for Independence\, it is these local dresses in fulled wool or spun silk that continue to inspire creativity\, resilience and empathy in us today. From the mythology of homespun to the legends of midnight rides in red cloaks and clashes the dirty blue shirts share stories of women who waged war on multiple fronts as well as a look at what they wore as their worlds turned upside down. This program is presented by costumed historians and includes reproduction clothing pieces and fabric samples as well as a presentation with images of extant originals.
