SUMMARY:The Road Where It Happened: Revolution Comes to Menotomy
DESCRIPTION:The Road Where It Happened: Revolution Comes to Menotomy \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, December 6\, 2:00 to 3:30 pm \nExhibit runs through Saturday\, March 14\, 2026 \n  \nThe Old Schwamb Mill is reopening its Arlington 250 exhibit\, The Road Where It Happened: Revolution Comes to Menotomy\, which includes an interactive gallery for families. The exhibit examines the landscape and people of Menotomy and their role in the founding of America. Informative panels answer questions including how prehistoric geological forces created the landscape of Menotomy and how the narrow corridor of Battle Road between steep hillsides at the Foot of the Rocks in Arlington Heights influenced the outcome of the American Revolution. The exhibit also identifies some of the people in Menotomy who played a role on that critical day of April 19\, 1775. \n  \nArlington 250 is a multi-year commemoration\, recognition\, and celebration of our history from its colonial beginnings to the present. A variety of programs at the Mill and other historic sites in the region recount the history we know and some stories previously untold as our ancestors battled for the rights and freedoms of everyone. The “Road” exhibit was originally shown at the Mill from December 2024 through May 2025 and at Arlington Town Hall from September to November 2025. \n  \nMill Hours: Tuesday and Saturday\, 10 am-4 pm. Open for guided tours of our living history museum; viewing of the exhibition in our second-floor galleries; and sales of our custom-made\, museum quality\, oval and circular picture and mirror frames. \n  \nThe Old Schwamb Mill\, 17 Mill Lane\, Arlington\, MA\, 02476\,  www.oldschwambmill.org. \n781-643-0554 or info@oldschwambmill.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Inspirational Jam: Paintings by Carl Ristaino
DESCRIPTION:Carl Ristaino’s imagination comes alive through dynamic jazz scenes and whimsical cityscapes in Inspirational Jam\, on view in the Wedge Gallery from Jan 26 – Mar 29. Join us for the opening reception on Jan 28 at 6 PM celebrating Inspirational Jam and Marsha Wilcox’s Ancient Light (RSVPs appreciated).  \nWorking in acrylics\, Ristaino builds layers of bold color that capture the transcendence of live music and fantastical worlds. In his jazz series\, Ristaino’s canvases become stages where musicians lean into their instruments\, vocalists throw their heads back in ecstatic song\, and the audience communes over the pleasure of spontaneous creativity. His paintings don’t just document performance; they are improvisations themselves. \nRistaino’s Ancient Cities take us to unknown\, and yet familiar\, places. He combines castles and pirate ships with UFO’s and ancient pyramids to build a world of pure creativity. Each Ancient City invites the viewer to imagine a new story and to look closely at the canvas\, and within themselves\, to discover new corners of imagination. \nArtist Talk (both Carl Ristaino and Marsha Wilcox of Ancient Light): February 21\, 2:00 PM\, Black Box Theater\, RSVPs appreciated

SUMMARY:Westford REV 250: “Affectionate Friends and Humble Servants” Mercy Otis Warren and Martha Washington
DESCRIPTION:The Westford Museum and Historical Society\, in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Westford\, is pleased to announce the upcoming event\, “Affectionate Friends and Humble Servants\,” featuring American notable figures Mercy Otis Warren and Martha Washington. \nSet in the late 18th century\, this engaging conversation unfolds between Martha Washington (Sandy Spector) and Mercy Otis Warren (Michele Gabrielson)\, a notable playwright and activist. Nestled in a warm parlor\, they delve into their friendship\, discussing their respective contributions during the revolutionary era and the challenges they faced along the way. Through a blend of dialogue and historical anecdotes\, their exchange highlights both personal reflections and the larger political landscape\, showcasing the bond that empowered their influence in the nascent nation. \nAbout the Performers \nMichele Gabrielson\, M.Ed.\, is a professional historian\, public school educator\, and historical interpreter of the 18th century. She serves on several historic committees and is secretary for the recently formed nonprofit\, The Mercy Otis Warren Society. The Massachusetts History Alliance awarded her a 2024 Rising Star Award for Public History for her programming titled “The Revolutionary Classroom.” She was named a 2024 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year finalist. Michele was recently awarded the Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution’s Outstanding History Teacher of the Year for 2025. \nSandy Spector portrays Martha Washington\, forging authentic connections through engaging conversation and storytelling. Her passion for history began while living near Valley Forge Park\, which inspired her to become a Revolutionary War reenactor in 1999. Initially\, she started as a camp follower with the 10th Massachusetts Regiment and later assumed the role of Tipsy Ne’erdowell\, showcasing the customs of the era. \nToday\, Sandy focuses on bringing Martha Washington to life for audiences through The Ladies of Refined Taste and ongoing research about the Washingtons. For over a decade\, she has performed at various venues\, including National Park Service sites and schools\, both virtually and in person\, across multiple states. \nWhen she isn’t researching Martha\, Mount Vernon\, or the perspective of an 18th-century woman\, Sandy works as a nonprofit administrator. She resides south of Boston with her husband and three children. \nSponsored by \nEdward M. Connolly Insurance Agency\, Inc

SUMMARY:Lou Jones’ panAFRICAproject Comes to the Old Schwamb Mill
DESCRIPTION:The Old Schwamb Mill is proud to host the panAFRICAproject\, a compelling photography exhibition by Boston-based photographer Lou Jones. On view from March 21 through May 16\, the exhibition opens with a public reception at 2:00 PM on March 21 and concludes with a closing talk and event at 2:00 PM on May 16. \nMore than a decade in the making\, panAFRICAproject is a country-by-country visual documentary that challenges long-standing stereotypes and reframes how Africa is understood in the Western imagination. Rather than focusing on narratives of conflict and poverty\, Jones turns his lens toward the vibrancy\, innovation\, and everyday realities of contemporary African life\, highlighting industry\, education\, healthcare\, sports\, music\, and infrastructure across the continent. The project has grown into an expansive visual archive and educational platform\, exhibited in schools\, galleries\, museums\, and public spaces. With a long-term goal of documenting all 54 African countries\, the project continues to evolve as a celebration of culture\, progress\, and daily life. \nHosting panAFRICAproject at the Old Schwamb Mill places these global stories within a site deeply rooted in craft\, labor\, and community history. As a living industrial museum\, the mill provides a unique setting where photography\, history\, and contemporary dialogue intersect. The exhibition also serves as a community gathering point\, welcoming visitors of all ages. Lou Jones puts together a powerful photography exhibition reimagining how Africa is seen\, and bringing global stories into a historic local space.

This exhibit is a celebration of how Black people’s magic and culture continue to shape the world. It’s a love letter to our legacy and a testament to our power.” \n \nCrown is more than an exhibit—it is a celebration of identity\, heritage\, and creativity.
