DESCRIPTION:NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. \nWhat can small New England towns teach us about the meaning of independence—250 years later? \nIn this engaging talk\, local historian and teacher Tim Castner explores how town meetings became a training ground for democracy in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Starting with the story of Mary Rowlandson\, we’ll look at how shared experiences of conflict and survival shaped community life and political decision-making. \nAlong the way\, we’ll consider both the promise and the limits of these early democratic practices—and what they still mean today. \nNOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. \nDATE: Wednesday\, May 6 \nTIME: 6:30 – 7:30 PM \nLOCATION: Reference Room\, Thayer Memorial Library\, 717 Main Street\, Lancaster\, MA 01523 \n  \nThis program is offered by Thayer Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:"A Rebel Town: Groton’s Revolutionary War Sites" Audio Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:“A Rebel Town: Groton’s Revolutionary War Sites” is an immersive audio walking tour created by the Destination Groton Committee to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the start of the American Revolution. \nLocal historian Joshua Vollmar researched\, wrote and will be your guide on the tour as you explore Groton\, Massachusetts — a town whose rich history was pivotal during America’s struggle for independence. Groton stood prominently as a community where ordinary citizens\, including minutemen ready to march at a moment’s notice under the leadership of Colonel William Prescott\, courageous women who guarded against British spies\, and Black residents seeking freedom\, actively shaped history. Colonel Prescott played a critical role in leading local minutemen\, notably commanding American forces at the iconic Battle of Bunker Hill. \nThis free\, self-guided tour includes 16 stops: the first 10 are easily accessible on foot within Groton’s town center\, while the final 6 stops are best reached by car or bike\, though a few are within a 10-minute walk from the center. Each stop includes a brief\, informative audio segment lasting 4 to 5 minutes\, and while you of course can listen at your own pace\, the entire tour can be comfortably completed in under two hours. \nFor your convenience\, each location has a dedicated Google Map link\, allowing you to effortlessly obtain walking or driving directions right on your mobile device. Start scrolling down below and enjoy discovering how this small New England town played a crucial role in shaping the history of the United States. \nCLICK TO ACCESS THE TOUR. \nDATE & Time: The tour can be experienced on site in person in Groton or virtually. \nLOCATION: Groton\, MA 01450 \n  \nThis program is offered by Destination Groton as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature\, Culture & History\, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places\, objects\, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. SUMMARY:“In Support of the Army”: How the Housewives of Massachusetts Supported the Continental Troops
DESCRIPTION:It is often said that the army marches on its stomach and it’s just as true during the 18th century as it is today. But how was the army supplied with that food? How was it cooked/processed? And what ways did the food that housewives cooked/processed/preserved in their homes support the Continental Army as it grew from local militia groups at the Battel of Bunker Hill to a full army under General George Washington? \nFoodways historian Stacy Booth will discuss not only how the housewives of Massachusetts provisioned the army in the early years of the Revolutionary War but also how they used food and cooking as ways to protest taxation and the political policies that fanned the flames of a revolution. \nStacy Booth is a foodways historian with almost 20 years of experience reenacting and presenting to the public. She specializes in 17th and 18th century New England foodways presentations and cooking demonstrations. \nShe also runs her business\, Forgotten Recipes (forgotten-recipes.com)\, where she has presented\, cooked at or set up displays for libraries\, museums and historic houses for the past six years. \nPart of Bigelow Free Public Library’s Revolution 250 Series\, supported\, in part\, through the Freedom’s Way NHA Partnership Grant Program
