SUMMARY:Gathering Hearts: A Community Vigil of Culture\, Resilience\, and Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Gathering Hearts is a free public community gathering that will bring together residents of Fitchburg and the surrounding region for an afternoon of cultural expression\, reflection\, and solidarity. The event will include traditional dance\, music\, prayer\, and spoken reflections led by cultural groups\, community organizations\, and faith leaders. \nInspired by traditions of peaceful cultural protest practiced throughout Puerto Rico\, the Caribbean\, and Central America\, the event will use song\, dance\, prayer\, and community presence to create space for remembrance\, healing\, and resilience. Participants will gather to honor individuals and families affected by immigration enforcement while celebrating the cultural traditions and strength of Fitchburg’s Latino and immigrant communities. \nThe gathering will take place at Fitchburg Abolitionist Park\, connecting contemporary struggles for dignity and justice with the city’s historic role in the movement to end slavery in the United States. The event will activate the park as a living public space where history\, culture\, and civic engagement intersect. \nDATE: Sunday\, May 17 \nTIME: 2 – 4 PM \nLOCATION: Fitchburg Abolitionist Park\, 50 Snow Street\, Fitchburg\, MA 01420 \nACCESS: Fitchburg Abolitionist Park has handicap accessible sidewalk access at three points – at the entrance\, and at the corners of Snow/Cherry and Snow/Union streets; there are ten spaces across the street from the Park and three handicap spaces in front of the Park. The outdoor historic timeline is set to be wheelchair-height. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we close out Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program with a guided walking tour hosted by the Arlington Historical Society and Arlington 250. \nSPACE IS LIMITED TO 12; REGISTRATION REQUIRED – CLICK TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT!\nAround Patriots’ Day two small British flags appear in the Old Burying Ground in Arlington\, Massachusetts. These flags have been appearing for decades in the same place along the west wall of the cemetery. Historical references point to a mass grave of 40 British regulars who died on April 19\, 1775 in the retreat from Lexington and Concord in this location. A recent Ground Penetrating Radar study revealed disturbed soil in this location consistent with a mass grave. A permanent monument\, dedicated September 7\, 2024\, now marks this historic site. Visit the Arlington Historical Society’s website to learn more about this exciting project.  \nOur program will begin with a brief tour of the Jason Russell House where British bullet holes from April 19th\, 1775 can still be seen. We will then walk a flat and easy 0.3 miles to the Old Burying Ground\, passing Robbins Memorial Town Hall\, a statue by Cyrus Dallin\, the Winfield Robbins Memorial Gardens and the Whittemore-Robbins House. \nArriving at the Old Burying Ground\, we will see the recently dedicated Monument to the Fallen Crown Soldiers who Died on April 19\, 1775 and the 2023 Monument to Enslaved and Free Persons of Color in Menotomy who are buried in the same area. Before returning to the Jason Russell House\, we will visit the 1848 Revolutionary War Monument that marks the burial site of Jason Russell and 11 of his fellow Patriots who fell on April 19th\, 1775. \nPARKING: A small lot is located behind the Jason Russell House on Jason Terrace. Ample street parking is available on nearby Mass. Ave. and Jason Street. \n===\nThis walking tour is featured in the 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks series\, “How We Remember.” Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks is part of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s larger interpretive strategy which aims to provide life-long learning opportunities to residents and visitors\, connecting them to local landscapes while raising awareness of and inspiring support for conservation and preservation initiatives in the region. \nThis year’s thematic focus is inspired by our semiquincentennial initiative\, How We Remember: A Survey of Revolutionary War Monuments\, Memorials and Markers within the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area’s 2024 Connecting Communities: Walks & Talks program with a Concord’s North Bridge: History & Memory tour hosted by Minute Man National Historical Park. \nAt 11:00 a.m. meet a Park Ranger at the benches by the North Bridge for this 30 minute program. Learn about the momentous battle at Concord’s North Bridge\, where the British Army suffered its first casualties of the war\, and the legacy of this event in American History. \nThe program meets at the eastern bank of Concord’s North Bridge which is around 400 feet from the North Bridge parking lot located along Monument Street. There is a crosswalk connecting the bridge trail to the parking lot. The program can be accessed via a wide dirt walking trail. The trail is leveled and has a slight slope leading down to the bridge. There are sitting bench options both at the program location and located along the trail. Some program guides may move from one side of the bridge to the other (east to west). The bridge itself is roughly 140 Feet long and slightly arched. Over the centuries\, thousands of people have descended upon the Battle Green to welcome Revolutionary War heroes like the Marquis de Lafayette on his tour of America in 1824. The anniversaries of the battle offered them a glimpse of President Grant in 1875 and a word from President Ford in 1975. On this land\, protestors have sat and monuments have been built to the fallen. Join a Lexington Historical Society educator as they illuminate 250 years of stories full of crowds\, chaos and celebrations! \nThis FREE walking tour is offered by the Lexington Historical Society. Starting and ending at Buckman Tavern\, it explores areas around the Lexington Battle Green. Get in the spirit by taking a nice walk while learning about some important Acton history. Since its founding in 1735\, Acton has shown courage in protecting its liberties\, as demonstrated in leading the first engagement in the fight for independence. Walking Acton’s historic civic center with tour leader Amy Cole\, you will learn about the people\, places and practices that shaped the town’s history and our nation’s as well. Topics will include Native American history\, the role of the church\, the importance of Captain Isaac Davis and the Acton Minutemen\, nearby historic buildings\, memorials and more. \nThe walk is free but registration is required and capped at 20 attendees for each day. This year’s series titled “Operation Pollination” focuses on native pollination systems specific to the Heritage Area\, highlighting the work of our partners while sharing ways in which you can help these systems thrive. \nDid you know that cities are teeming with biodiversity? Insect pollinators like bees\, butterflies\, and beetles thrive in the city and help to sustain our local food systems and ecosystems. Come explore the flower gardens at Tufts University to learn how ecologically minded garden design can benefit both people and pollinators in the city. Guided by Tufts Pollinator Initiative experts\, we’ll spy charismatic animals like bumble bees\, green metallic sweat bees\, monarch butterflies\, and more! \nTwo Pollinator Safaris led by trained TPI guides will be offered: 9:30-10:30 AM and 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. TPI guides will be available for a Q&A session 15 minutes afterwards. Programs are free and open to the public—click here to register. \nPollinators and other beneficial insects are experiencing drastic and widespread declines. The number of species documented as threatened or endangered continues to grow making pollinator conservation a national priority.
