In this Emmy-nominated film\, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist–and former Lexington resident–Robert Putnam. Why is American democracy in crisis? And\, most importantly… What can we do about it? Learn more about the documentary here and join us in January!

SUMMARY:"I Screamed with All My Might" - The Civilians Trapped Behind the Boston Siege Lines
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, numerous civilians found themselves trapped within Boston\, encircled by the newly formed Massachusetts Grand Army. The constant fear of an American assault\, coupled with outbreaks of disease and the erosion of civil liberties under martial rule fostered an atmosphere of desperation. Civilians found themselves caught between two armies and two worlds\, unable to flee and the uncertainty of what awaited them if they chose to remain. The experiences of those trapped behind enemy lines unveil another dimension of the Revolution: the quiet endurance of ordinary men\, women\, and children who faced hunger\, fear\, and hardship in their struggle to survive. \nAlexander Cain\, JD\, earned his economics degree from Merrimack College in 1993 and obtained his Juris Doctor from the New England School of Law in 1996. He has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution. He published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers. He created the blog and podcast Historical Nerdery (historicalnerdery.com). He is in the process of writing “For God’s Sake Fire!” – The Massachusetts Militia System on the Eve of the Battles of Lexington and Concord\, which is anticipated to be released in 2027. Alex leads an educational initiative in Northeastern Massachusetts that aims to introduce high school students to careers in advanced manufacturing\, construction\, and the skilled trades. \nRemote Participation: You can watch live on YouTube at Acton TV http://tinyurl.com/Acton-TV. Recordings will be available at Acton TV https://actontv.org/ and on our website https://www.actonma.gov/250 where you’ll find all programming information and a link to our commemorative store.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Ancient Light and Inspirational Jam
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of The Umbrella’s Winter exhibitions\, Ancient Light and Inspirational Jam featuring the works of Marsha Wilcox and Carl Ristaino. RSVP appreciated. \nAbout the exhibitions: \nAncient Light: Celestial Photography by Marsha Wilcox | The Allie Kussin Gallery | January 12 – March 22\, 2026 \nCelestial photographer Marsha Wilcox has been passionate about outer space since her childhood when her father taught her about celestial navigation. Like so many before her\, Marsha has wondered about the cosmos: its beauty\, mystery\, and immensity. \nAncient Light invites you to look up and explore the worlds beyond our own. Through long-exposure photography\, Marsha is able to capture the night sky high above Concord. What will these celestial bodies tell us about ourselves? How can we reconnect with our past\, present\, and future by connecting with the cosmos? \nInspirational Jam: Paintings by Carl Ristaino | The Wedge Gallery | January 26 – March 29\, 2026 \nWorking in acrylics\, Carl Ristaino’s imagination comes alive through dynamic jazz scenes and whimsical cityscapes. He builds layers of bold color that capture the transcendence of live music and fantastical worlds. In his jazz series\, Ristaino’s canvases become stages where musicians lean into their instruments\, vocalists throw their heads back in ecstatic song\, and the audience communes over the pleasure of spontaneous creativity. His paintings don’t just document performance; they are improvisations themselves. \nRistaino’s Ancient Cities take us to unknown\, and yet familiar\, places. He combines castles and pirate ships with UFO’s and ancient pyramids to build a world of pure creativity. Each Ancient City invites the viewer to imagine a new story and to look closely at the canvas\, and within themselves\, to discover new corners of imagination. \nAdmission is free and the galleries are open to all. SUMMARY:Holiday Pops Concert with the Firebird Pops Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:‘Tis the season to warm your soul with the festive sounds of the Firebird Pops Orchestra in The Umbrella’s state-of-the-art Theater 144. \nCozy up to two acts of beloved holiday classics–plus some new favorites!–performed by talented musicians from across New England. Let these rich\, vibrant orchestrations provide the soundtrack to your December as you enjoy solos by Mara Bonde\, Sandra Piques Eddy\, and Stephen Markarian with your loved ones. \nBringing the family? Pops the perfect introduction to the magic of the symphony for listeners of all ages. During intermission\, let little ones explore Educational activities with an Umbrella instructor while you visit Concessions and take in the beautiful abstract works in the Allie Kussin Gallery\, Joy & Peace. \nThere’s nothing quite like experiencing the joy of a full orchestra together—especially when everyone gets to sing along. Let your voice join in a rousing sing-along finale that fosters the warmth of community against the December chill. \nAbout The Firebird Pops Orchestra \nThe online musical sensation Firebird Pops was born “out of the ashes” of the COVID-19 shutdown\, its inaugural virtual performances taking grateful audiences by storm. Under the baton of founder and music director\, Brendan Kenney\, almost 60 musicians performed Harry Potter Symphonic Suite\, a medley of the score from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone\, garnering praise from MuggleNet.com\, Nerdist\, and New England’s Channel 7 News. Since then\, the orchestra has continued to grow in size and notoriety with its innovative digital performances from Phantom of the Opera\, the launch of the Firebird Vox choir\, and fresh seasonal concerts for the Halloween and Winter Holidays. Formally granted nonprofit status\, the Firebird Pops organization looks forward to expanding its in-person repertoire\, and The Umbrella is proud to introduce them to live audiences in our state-of-the-art Main Stage Theater 144!

SUMMARY:Middlesex Conservation District FY 2025 Annual Meeting with Russ Cohen: Nibbling on the Wild Landscape of Middlesex County
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at our Fiscal Year 2025 Annual Meeting with a presentation by Russ Cohen! \nDinner and snacks will be provided free of charge. \nPresentation: Nibbling on the Wild Landscape of Middlesex County\n \n\n\nDuration: 0.5 hour business meeting & 2 hour presentation with Russ Cohen (includes Q&A and nibbling on foraged goodies!)\nProgram Type: In-person\nCost: Free\, Registration Preferred\nMaximum Number of Participants: 75\nPresentation Speaker: Russ Cohen \nRegister Here\nDonations are welcome! \nWe start with a  short business meeting. At this meeting\, we will be voting on candidates for the Board of Supervisors for Middlesex Conservation District. Anyone who is a land user in Middlesex County is invited to vote. The agenda can be found here. \nPresentation Description:\nMiddlesex County is home to over 80 species of edible wild plants.  Many of these species are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species like Black Raspberry and Shagbark Hickory; non-native weeds like Burdock and Chicory; and exotic invasive species like Dame’s Rocket and Japanese Knotweed. Join Russ Cohen\, wild edibles enthusiast and author of the book Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, for a 90-minute slide show covering at least three dozen of the tastiest species the region has to offer.  These include plant species everyone knows well\, like Daisies and Dandelions\, to species they may never have even heard of\, like Calamus and Carrion Flower. Russ’ talk will also include native species suitable for planting in peoples’ yards.  Keys to the identification of each species will be provided\, along with info on edible portion(s)\, season(s) of availability and preparation methods\, as well as guidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging.  Russ will also include a few details regarding some native edible plants he has grown successfully from seed and added to Middlesex County landscapes in partnership with land trusts\, municipalities and other groups.  Last but not least\, Russ will accompany his talk with handouts and several foraged goodies made with wild ingredients.\n \nRuss Cohen’s Bio:\nUntil his retirement in June of 2015\, Russ Cohen’s “day job” was serving as the Rivers Advocate for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Ecological Restoration\, where one of his areas of expertise was in riparian vegetation. Now Russ has more time to pursue his passionate avocation\, which is connecting to nature via his taste buds\, and assisting others in doing the same. In addition to leading over three dozen wild edibles-themed walks and talks each year at a wide variety of venues throughout the Northeast\, Russ has now taken on a role of Johnny Appleseed for edible native species. He has set up a small nursery (in Weston) where he grows/keeps plants that he propagates from seed (some of which he collected himself). He is then collaborating with land trusts\, cities and towns\, schools and colleges\, state and federal agencies\, Tribal members and groups\, organic farms and others to plant plants from his nursery in appropriate places on their properties. Russ has collaborated on over three dozen such projects in the past decade (at least eight of which are in Middlesex County). \n  \n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Iron Work Farm living history program: "How Mummers Saved Christmas"
DESCRIPTION:What did the colonists celebrate before Thanksgiving and Christmas?  Come to the Faulkner House at 5 High Street and discover the clandestine way the American colonists celebrated the Yuletide season. Christmas celebrations were disguised as other celebrations\, and the colonists disguised themselves\, too. We will gather by the bonfire for song\, revelry and a raucous mummers’ play just as the early Americans did. Learn how celebrating Christmas could land you a fine\, a day in the stocks or even jail!   This is a great way to start the holiday season and to begin the revelry–at the oldest house in Acton.

SUMMARY:The Umbrella Concert Series in partnership with Salt Lick Incubator presents Salt Lick Sessions
DESCRIPTION:The Umbrella’s expanded Concert Series in partnership with Salt Lick Incubator showcases some of your future-favorite musical acts that have emerged through the Salt Lick program. Each concert spotlights the incredible talents of tomorrow’s groundbreaking artists\, creates support and lets you say you knew them back when! Featuring: Olivia Barton\, Carter Benjamin\, and Kieran Rhodes. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nOlivia Barton writes songs that walk the line between unfiltered and refined. With reverence for the craft of songwriting\, Barton writes and sings like she speaks: unapologetic\, yet approachable\, turning crowds into confidants. Having shared stages with Lizzy McAlpine\, Madi Diaz\, Field Medic\, Searows\, Annika Bennett\, and others\, her songs carry what folk music has always carried: emotion\, memory\, simple truth. \nAn indie/alternative artist blending folk\, gospel\, and soul-infused rock\, Carter Benjamin’s music is rooted in storytelling\, exploring themes of identity\, resilience\, and belonging. From his upbringing in Grand Cayman and DC to his bold\, genre-defying album Black Boys on the Radio Part II\, Benjamin reclaims space for voices too often left out of the conversation. \nKieran Rhodes is a piano-driven pop artist and songwriter whose music blends timeless melodies with sharp lyrical storytelling. A Berklee College of Music alum and America’s Got Talent standout\, Rhodes gained viral attention with his original song “Disengage” and further recognition when his song “What Got Into You” was featured in Netflix’s Virgin River. He has opened for artists including JP Saxe\, Ben Abraham\, and Five for Fighting\, and performed at major festivals like Boston Calling.
