Shirley‘s School #8 was built in 1848 and housed classes into the early 20th century. Then it was used as a municipal building where community groups could meet. In 1976, the Shirley Historical Society began the project to return the building to its appearance as a schoolhouse. Visitors can now sit at an old fashioned desk, look at vintage books, write with a fountain pen, and experience what it was like to attend class in a one-room schoolhouse.

This program is offered by the Shirley Historical Society as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.
