Shirley‘s School #8 was built in 1848 and housed classes into the early 20th century. Then it was used as a municipal building where community groups could meet. In 1976, the Shirley Historical Society began the project to return the building to its appearance as a schoolhouse. Visitors can now sit at an old fashioned desk, look at vintage books, write with a fountain pen, and experience what it was like to attend class in a one-room schoolhouse.
This program is offered by the Shirley Historical Society as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public. Click to discover more Hidden Treasures!
