On April 19th, 1775, when a network of alarms brought the news that the British were marching towards Concord a great many men from Harvard were ready to respond. They had organized into various companies of militia, “alarm men,” and minutemen. Most of the Harvard men supplied their own guns, and they marched off wearing their everyday clothing. Discover more about the arms they carried at our Spring Program on April 17, 2025.
Flintlock Muskets and Rifles of the American Revolution — Ed Sterling of Bolton and Keith Hatfield of Waltham
Learn about the muskets and rifles that were used during the American Revolution, both by the British and the Colonists. Using their own rifles and those in the collection of the Harvard Historical Society, Ed and Keith will show the operation of these guns, describe how they were made and show how muskets and rifles are different. There will be NO actual live firing, of course.
Both Ed Sterling and Keith Hatfield are certified instructors in muzzleloading firearms.
Following the presentation, a chance to see the firearms up close, ask questions, and enjoy refreshments and conversation
