Who were the earliest settlers of what became known as Lancaster, and how did they live? Neolithic artifacts suggest that early peoples of this area were more sophisticated than we modern folk realize. They knew the land well, where to find minerals or other materials, and what they were best used for.
Lancaster’s public library has housed a historical museum since 1863. One cabinet contains stone tools and objects collected in the earliest days of the museum. They are no doubt the most ancient objects from the history of Lancaster and New England we have, yet we have little information about them. There is much to know and appreciate about these items and why we have them.
All Lancaster History Month events will take place in the Dexter Room at Thayer Memorial Library, located at 717 Main Street, Lancaster. Patrons are welcome to use the handicap parking spaces both in front of and behind the library. Each room of the building is ADA compliant; we have an elevator and automatic doors.
This program is offered by Thayer Memorial Library as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public. Click to discover more Hidden Treasures!
