Grand Reopening of Sandy Pond Schoolhouse

05.18.24 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free

This May 18 Open House will celebrate the grand reopening of Sandy Pond Schoolhouse following a multi-year restoration effort. Opened in 1869, Sandy Pond Schoolhouse is listed on National Register of Historic Places and is Ayer’s oldest public building. Following its closing as a school in 1906, the schoolhouse was acquired in 1908 by Sandy Pond School Association, an all volunteer non-profit organization. SPSA’s sole purpose is to manage, maintain, and provide public access to this iconic property, a mission it has successfully carried out for over 115 years.

This celebratory event will feature presentations by state legislators and local authorities, tours of the schoolhouse, lectures on its history and role in the community, free coffee and baked goods, music, and activities for children of all ages.

There are no registration requirements for this free event, which will be open to the public. Off street parking will be arranged with the assistance of the Ayer police department. The rain date is Sunday, May 19.

This program is offered by the Sandy Pond School Association as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public. Click to discover more Hidden Treasures!
