Dimensions of Arlington History Viewed Through the Lens of Today’s Racial Reckoning

May 23, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

In this illustrated Louise Ruma Ivers Memorial Lecture, Richard A. Duffy presents nuanced context for the ways in which Black, brown, and Indigenous peoples have been portrayed in presenting the history of Arlington, Massachusetts. Sharing both dispiriting stereotypes and the inspiring work of allies in the cause of racial justice, this lecture is but one step in our contemporary journey towards improving historical assessment of our community’s evolution.

This program is offered by the Arlington Historical Society and Arlington Human Rights Commission as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public. Click to discover more Hidden Treasures!
