The History of Trolley Service in Westford
In the early 1900s, the Lowell & Fitchburg Street Railway operated a trolley line connecting Lowell to Ayer. This line passed through North Chelmsford and extended to Forge Village. In 1907, a branch line of the Lowell & Fitchburg ran along Brookside Road, around Whidden’s Corner, and terminated at the Stony Brook railroad tracks at Moore’s Mill in Brookside. Passengers would then cross the railroad tracks to board another trolley car that took them to Westford Center.
Although this branch line closed in 1919, the central Lowell and Fitchburg trolley system remained in service until it was sold for scrap in 1929.
