Wachusett Mountain, located in central Massachusetts, is known as the highest point in the Commonwealth east of the Berkshires, and is a popular destination for hiking on 17 miles of trails. A little-known “secret” is that the Mountain is home to “old-growth forest,” trees that have never been cut and are living out their natural life spans of several hundred years. Some of the trees date back to the 1600’s!
Join a DCR park guide on a three and-a-half mile walk to witness these rare treasures and learn why they exist here and how to recognize the characteristics of old-growth forest. Walking will be moderate with some steep rocky sections. Participants should wear good hiking shoes and bring water and a curious mind. Photos are welcome.
This program is offered by Massachusetts DCR as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.
