Noted for its old mills that line the Nashua River, its hilly topography, several regional parks, and tightly knit neighborhood enclaves, Fitchburg retains its small-town character despite being one of the largest and most diverse cities in Worcester County.
Located just ten miles from New Hampshire and fifty miles from Boston, Fitchburg has a vibrant cultural community supported by Fitchburg State University and the Fitchburg Art Museum, founded by artist and collector Eleanor Norcross in 1929 “for the joy and inspiration of art.”
Fitchburg was once home to the annual Longsjo Classic bicycle race, a world famous and time-honored, classic American cycling event. Established in 1960 in memory of two-time Olympian Art Longsjo, the Longsjo Classic was the second oldest cycling race in the USA until it disbanded in 2020.
