Midstate Trail

The Midstate Trail is a scenic footpath located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. This 92 mile north-south hiking trail extends from the Rhode Island state border in Douglas State Forest, crossing the gentle hills of central Massachusetts, and eventually connecting to the Wapack Trail at the New Hampshire state border in the Mount Watatic Reservation in Ashburnham. The Midstate Trail is highly accessible, easy to hike, and the best way to enjoy the natural side of the region.

Within the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area, the trail serves the communities of Ashburnham, Westminster, and Princeton. Sites of interest along the trail in the Heritage Area include Redemption Rock, Wachusett Mountain State Reservation, and Mass Audubon’s Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Midstate Trail Committee, under the auspices of the Worcester Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club, continues the administration and maintenance of the Trail. The Committee is augmented by a larger group of resident volunteer maintainers who are invaluable to the survival of the Midstate Trail.
