Located at the North Bridge Visitor Center in Minute Man National Historical Park, the Buttrick Estate garden’s design is attributed to landscape architects Harold Hill Blossom and Charles H. Wheeler. A significant example of a 20th century designed landscape, the gardens are an integral component of the six-acre historic landscape that surrounds the National Register-listed Buttrick House.
Established by the Buttrick family in 1911, the formal gardens are renowned for their collection of iris bred by Stedman Buttrick, Jr. A more naturalistic terrace garden affords a sweeping view of the Concord River and the North Bridge, the site of one of the opening battles of the American Revolution. The eclectic gardens feature ornamental trees, shrubs and perennials that bloom from spring to fall.
The gardens are beloved by the local community and every year over half a million visitors enjoy the gardens as part of their visit to the park. They are maintained by National Park Service staff with support from the Friends of Minute Man National Park, area garden clubs and community volunteers.
