Concord’s Old Hill Burying Ground

Monument Square, Concord, MA

It’s no surprise that Concord’s Old Burying Ground is full of Revolutionary history. The town’s earliest burial site, established in 1635, is located in Monument Square overlooking the town center. Approximately 50 veterans of the American Revolutionary War are interred here, including Major John Buttrick, who ordered the colonial militia to fire upon British soldiers at the North Bridge on April 19, 1775. Another notable grave site is that of Hugh Cargill, a former British soldier who later took up the Revolutionary cause.

Nineteen Patriots known to be buried here include:

James Barrett Sr • Nathan Barrett • Samuel Brooks • David Brown • Jacob Brown • Reuben Brown • Roger Brown • Samuel Brown • John Buttrick • William Emerson • Samuel Hosmer • Nehemiah Hunt • John Merriam • Josiah Merriam Sr • Nathan Merriam • Jonas Minot • Ephraim Wheeler • Ephraim Wood • Aaron Wright

This list was compiled from the SAR Patriot Research System. While our own research has identified discrepancies between various resources, we welcome your feedback should you notice something that should be revised.
