John Hitchcock Visitors Center

345 Mountain Road, Princeton, MA

Located at the entrance to the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation, the Visitors Center offers information about Wachusett Mountain’s hiking trails, including routes and seasonal conditions. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation manages the facility.

Exhibits detail the mountain’s unique geologic history, including the effects of the last glacial period; its human history, from the area’s indigenous peoples who gave the mountain its name, to the European colonists who settled the area; a stand of ancient trees found on the mountain, believed to be the only old-growth forest in Massachusetts east of the Connecticut River; and an antique collection of preserved birds that are found in the region. A magnificent stone fireplace warms winter visitors.

Restrooms are available during open hours and portable toilets are available in the parking lot if the Visitor Center is closed.
