Swords to Plowshares: Civil War Memorials and the Building of Memorial Hall
09.25.26 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Free
In the aftermath of the Civil War, towns throughout Massachsuetts committed funds to raise monuments dedicated to those who had died during the war. Most monuments took the form of a simple obelisk, tablet, or generic Union soldier, but Lancaster’s Memorial Hall – which had the dual purpose of serving as a monument to Lancaster’s Civil War dead and to house the Town’s public library – was markedly different. Join our Special Collections Librarian for this program, where she will examine how Memorial Hall came to be, and how the building remains a memorial to those Lancastrians who died in the deadliest war in American history.
