Spring Brook Farm

Spring Brook Farm has been passed down through the same family for over 300 years. The farm was first established in 1713 by Captain John Proctor. The King of England deeded the land to Proctor for his contributions to the British military during the French and Indian War. Another section of land, founded by Stephen Pingry in 1756, was later added to the property known as Spring Brook Farm.

Today, the 250-acre Spring Brook Farm remains one of the largest and oldest working farms in Massachusetts. Frank Matheson Jr. and his wife Fran are the ninth generation to farm this land, with the help of their sons, Frank William III and Scott. The Mathesons raise livestock, including beef, pork, and lamb. They also grow berries, vegetables, flowers, and grains. Spring Brook operated as a dairy beginning in the 1950s, but it ceased producing dairy products after the milking barn burned down in 2002.

In 2001, Spring Brook Farm’s post and beam country store was built using timber from the farm that was milled on an antique tractor-driven sawmill. Visitors to the store will find the farm’s own meat, eggs, and produce, as well as preserves, honey, baked goods, and gift items. A second “barn” location on Bruce Street sells many of the same items.

Spring Brook Farm goods can also be purchased at local farmers’ markets or through the farm’s CSA program.
